My Students

With all the budget cuts in education, subjects like social studies and civics education have taken a back seat. Social studies is still an important subject for my students to be exposed to especially with the upcoming presidential election.

I have a motivated and eager group of first graders.

Many of the students in my classroom are below grade level in all academic areas. Every day progress is made. The students live in a high poverty area. None of the students in my class have parents who attended or finished college and the majority of their parents have not finished high school. All the students in the school receive free lunch.

My Project

These materials will not only inspire students to encourage their families to vote but also teach them the process of how the president of the United States is elected. We will follow the candidates, discuss electoral votes, and the civil duty of all Americans to take part in such an important part of our country and government. I want them to understand the importance that they will be able to take part in one day. Students will be immersed in reading material that will also improve their reading abilities while learning academic vocabulary for the election process.

This project is so important for my students because election year only comes along once every four years.

I want my students to be able to be apart of this American moment. They will become informed citizens. Families in my communities feel that their vote doesn't count. These students will grow up being informed about the political process hopefully peeking their interest in other civic and social issues in their communities.
