My Students

The earth without art is just eh. My students do not have an art program. I try to incorporate the arts as much as possible in my classroom. I am blown away by the talents of my students. I want to help them showcase their talents.

My students are awesome!

They are fun, energized middle school-ers that desperately need a creative outlet. I am looking to facilitate more art in their lives. The enrollment is about 400 including ECHO (Exceptional Children Have Opportunities). We are located in the south suburbs of Chicago. The families in my district are mainly low-income families. My students and the district lack the funds and resources to provide school and art supplies.

My Project

Having basic art supplies in my classroom is a game changer. I teach about 150 students each trimester. I see all 6th, 7th and 8th graders in the school each year. Since I teach every student, the art supplies will create the opportunity to plan lessons that involve art and give each student a unique opportunity. Throughout the school year they do not have the opportunity to ever paint, or use most art supplies to create projects. I teach health education and I plan on using the material in many different ways. From anti-tobacco and anti-bullying posters, to environmental awareness projects, to human anatomy; creating large body maps, we will use every bit of the supplies received.

As a teenager I used art as an outlet.

I used art to express my ever-changing emotions. I used art to express my creativity. I used art to escape from the stresses of middle school and I used art to have fun! My students do not have an art program. It saddens me that my students do not have the opportunity to express their talents like I did. Education in the arts is an integral part of the development of each human being, and I hope to provide the opportunity of self-expression for my students.
