My second grade class of 22 students come from a variety of cultures, language needs, and learning styles. To best meet their needs, I do hands on activities to ensure that they not only hear about the subject matter, but that they experience it.

To help them learn about the rocks that make up the earth and it's layers, we take on the role of geologists discovering facts about rocks and the rock cycle. In order to help students learn about the different types of rocks and their properties they need to sort true samples. It is important to have opportunities to work with these samples in large and small groups so they can solidify their understanding of each type of rock and what properties help identify them.

The Earth Science Photo Book set will help introduce students to key concepts through pictures and words so they may learn about the earth and the rock cycle. The Rock Fossil Mineral Collection will give students hands on experience with different types of rocks so they can compare and contrast them, getting a clear understanding of how one type of rock can change into another type. The activity tub will help students synthesize all of the information they have learned and apply it while working together like true scientists do.
