Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am passionate about raising understanding and appreciation of music and art forms widely recognized for their rich cultural heritage and rooted in African American history. My students have been learning about jazz, Louis Armstrong, New Orleans and developing a love of the genre as they become familiar with jazz standards. And more recently becoming excited with the marching band program.

My students are unlocking elementary music skills through jazz with their brass and woodwind instruments, but we do not have a percussion section!

The drum is a vital component of jazz. And you cannot have a marching band without the drumline. Having drums in our band will provide the rhythm or beat, and it will keep the rest of the band in step. Providing carriers with the requested tenor quads and snare drums will allow students mobility in marching and participating in the community activities. The snare drumsticks will remove excess vibration and are consistent in weight and pitch, further helping students with the drums and expectations.

We are a Title I and Title III elementary school in District 75. Although funds continue to lessen, as we approach school events, we want to celebrate with our marching band in the parade and with our jazz band performing. My students with disabilities have overcome so much negativity and cynicism of others. And research has shown that playing the drums can lower anxiety and strengthen their focus. This resource will give them pride, help them learn repeated patterns, and be a vehicle to joy in the arts. They know I believe in them. Won't you believe in them, too!?
