My Students

Worrying about food, money, transportation, and clothing are adult worries, yet many of the students at my school face these "grown-up" problems each day. In spite of the challenges they face, they constantly rise to the occasion and frequently blow me away with their abilities to learn.

My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Some have, and some do not. It is my job to level their playing field so that all have a chance to be successful. Through hands-on, exciting, and active assessment, all students in my third grade, inner-city classroom prove themselves time and time again.

My Project

Recently, I had the privilege of visiting the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, GA. It is an AMAZING school in the inner city of Atlanta. The students and teachers there inspired me to be an even better teacher. I went back to school the day after my visit and implemented many of their strategies in my own classroom. One strategy I want to implement was their use of an African Djembe Drum to encourage and build class morale. Students freely banged the drum to encourage classmates who were struggling, those who were working on the board in front of the class, and to celebrate those who achieved success in the class. In my class, I plan to use the drum for musical science lessons and during class Arts Integration performances. I am hoping that there are generous donors out there who will help me get this amazing teaching tool for my classroom. My students need this drum to continue to build the morale of my classroom thus making them happier, more enthusiastic, successful learners.
