My Students

I am a 5th teacher at a Title I school in East Los Angeles. English is the second language for the majority of my class, all of them low income, and all of them qualify for the free lunch program. Though my students are growing up in an economically depressed area, with gang activity present in the community, they come to school ready to learn, enjoying challenges in their learning. Their curiosity, and enthusiasm for learning requires opportunities that challenge them as they acquire the skills they need to prepare them for college.

My Project

Having an adequate supply of domino sets will allow the entire class to engage in hand-on lessons as they learn to about fractions.

Working in pairs, students will add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions in an engaging manner using dominos.

Students will have opportunities to develop their English language skills as they cooperate with peers, collaborate and then teach their parents how to use dominos to solve math problems. The high level of engagement through these hands-on activities will increase their recall of fractions operations, allowing them to generalize their learning to solving word problems using the dominos. Solving fraction problems using dominoes also helps them work on social emotional skills like waiting for a turn and being focused and patient while helping them work on critical thinking skills
