My Students

In the city of Newark, many students live below the poverty line. Some cannot even wear clean clothes to school and are targets for bullies. Some students are teased and chastised because they were showing up to school in unkempt manners. Some of these students were becoming chronic absentees—missing three to five days of school per month—out of shame. We are a Title I school.

At this time in the school year, students are quarantined under the stay at home order in this Corona Virus and cannot go to school until the pandemic is over.

We have begun to engage them outside of the classroom with multiple social media platforms such as Zoom, Webex, Screen Castify, Google Docs, and Google Meetings. l am able to connect with them in spite of their physical attendance. Many of my students are members of the Football Team. I am involved in them beyond the classroom by involving them in positive social change, community service activities, and in their extracurricular activities. We also want them to learn the importance of serving their community.

My Project

These materials will make a huge difference in determining whether some of my senior and special needs students will be able to be equipped for college, participate and complete their course work virtually and online college platforms such as Google Classroom Google Meeting, Zoom, Webex, Screen Castify, and Blackboard.

Our school district is a Title I district and many seniors and special needs students did not get a technological device to take home because there were not enough available.

This technology shortage is preventing students from engaging, participating, and completing their course work.
