My students are amazing and they are trying their best to overcome numerous obstacles during these uncertain times. While remote learning my talented students are doing their best to overcome both their academic and social-emotional challenges. The students at my high school come from diverse backgrounds, many represent low socioeconomic statuses, and reside in an urban area. When they are at the point where they doubt that they can not overcome a challenge or find a solution to a problem, it is then that I remind them that diamonds are made under pressure.
The negative ramifications of the global pandemic and extended virtual learning have taken a toll on the mental health and welfare of many of my students.
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I have researched the evidence that social-emotional learning promotes academic success, better health, and mental well-being.
In response to this significant concern, I developed the innovative concept of the Diamond Club: SEL Support Group for all grade levels at my high school. The purpose of the Diamond Club: SEL Support Group is to not only address the five core SEL competencies of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making but, emotional intelligence, developing adaptive coping strategies, the practice of yoga, and mindfulness techniques as well. Students will also participate in art therapy, spoken word, creative writing, and journaling.
The end goals are to help my students learn the skills/strategies to deal with setbacks, to strengthen their coping mechanisms, learn how to overcome challenges, be resilient, and remain focused on accomplishing their post-secondary goals and aspirations. Once it has been deemed safe, I would also like for my students to have the opportunity to do community service projects. Finally, I want to ensure that they always remember our motto that pressure makes diamonds.
