I teach English Language Arts. I am also my school’s CFES (College for Every Student) Liaison and Mentoring Coordinator. These roles enable me to not only prepare my freshmen with early college awareness, but also maintain and develop that awareness throughout their high school years. In the past, I have taught a very successful unit on the impact of immigration on early America. We begin the unit by learning about the Irish Famine and Emigration. We then research early America through primary and secondary sources. After the preliminary research is done, we move onto our two historical Orphan Train novels, and culminate the unit with an essay that juxtaposes the African and Irish Experience and a creative writing assignment where my students create an original Orphan Train Journal. Each year, as I get more involved in the unit, my students do too. Many go out of their way to read all of the Orphan Train Books, including my reluctant readers. This is our best and last unit, designed to captivate the entire class until the end of the year, to ensure academic success. I’ve always taught this unit to freshmen and regretted their passion ended when the course did. Now, due to our school’s move to smaller learning academies, I’ll be teaching the same students that I taught last year. This means that I can continue our momentum by delving deeper into the immigrant experience. I can think of no better book to compliment their previous studies than Erik Larson’s, The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America . It’s a fascinating true story that explores how the Chicago World’s Fair helped define the American Dream and personify the epic battle between good and evil. They’ll be hooked by the first page. It will help them continue their American History studies as well as their ELA appreciation and understanding. This book epitomizes the Utopian and Dystopian aspects of our ever-changing world. It will challenge the class to become more aware and appreciative of the people and the world around them. Thankfully, It is also available as an audiobook titled, The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America, Vol. 12 by Erik Larson, Read by Scott Brick. This means that I can use the audio to help my students connect with the text and the unit in a way that I couldn't do by myself. They can hear an actor read the lines as Larson had intended So, what's the problem? We are a high needs school that suffers from budgetary constraints and logistical guidelines. We don't have the money to buy new class sets, which eliminates the opportunity for our students to read books written by newer authors. In the past, I’ve asked the students to buy books, but some couldn't so it was problematic. They were embarrassed, and I felt compelled to help. It was hard to take that financial burden. I'm looking for a class set that I can reuse over and over. You can make a difference in a school that so desperately wants to learn and grow, but is unfortunately lacking the necessary resources. Now is your chance to help them prepare for the world by making it a smaller place, through history and literature. Help them learn more about American History to better prepare them for the roles they will play in America’s future.
