The Crucible Comes Alive!

We need 103 tickets to see "The Crucible" on Broadway. I read this play every year with my class and this is a wonderful opportunity for the students to watch the play.

About My Students

Nahin, Evelyn, Cindy, and Beryl are in my 11th grade English class. They discovered that "The Crucible" was playing on Broadway and knew that we would be reading this play starting in March. They were excited about the possibility of attending this show, while reading the play in class.

They began researching the dates, location, and cost for this play on Broadway. Once they realized that the play would be showing at the same time as we were studying it in class, they became very excited. They discovered that the tickets would be costly and began investigating ways to help with the cost of the tickets. Once I informed them of the student-led projects that could be done with "DonorChoose," they became hopeful that this trip could be an actual possibility. They are excited to think that they would be the first class to have the opportunity to see the actual play being performed while reading it in class. This is the only year that this opportunity has presented itself. I also told them that this project would fall into the category of using Arts to Teach Humanities so would have the opportunity to get half funding for that through an anonymous donor who is looking to support these types of projects. This increased their hopes of this project getting funded.

After attending the performance of this play, my students will be able to make a connection between what they have read in class to what they have seen performed. It provides them with two different types of presentation of the same content which deepens their comprehension and appreciation of this text. Seeing this performance will bring the text to life for them and make this a truly memorable experience for them. Working together on this project continues to build their teamwork and problem-solving skills as they try to gather the information that they need and coincide the possible performance dates with our school calendar. "The Crucible" is a rich literary text, which helps to build students' understanding of how various historical events are connected to one another and how we must learn from history in order to not repeat the same horrific mistakes that have happened in the past. The viewing of the play will build their knowledge of the importance of this literature.

In Their Own Words

We have set a goal of making it possible to view the actual performance of the play that we will be reading in class. This is very exciting to us because we often read books and plays in class but rarely, or almost never, have the opportunity to see the live performance of what we are reading and studying in class. This opportunity will make this play more enjoyable to read and will help us to better understand what we are reading.

As a team we have discovered that this play was being performed. Our teacher would not have known about this opportunity if we did not present it to her. We then looked into the cost and dates of the performance, as well as the location where the play was being performed. Once this project is funded, we will help to organize our class to write thank you letters to the donors and will help with taking photographs at the play so our donors can see how much all of us enjoyed this opportunity.

This project is important to us because it is the first and only time that this play is being performed while it is being read at our school. We are excited to be the only class to be presented with this opportunity. Sometimes there may be a movie to go along with a book we read in school, but never an actual live play performance. What better way to bring the words on the page to life for us! Students will not be able to say they are bored with this text, this year!
