Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The students who visit the library come for many different reasons, mostly for a safe and accepting place to be during the day. I have found that students appreciate having something to do while they are here, we have done lots of small crafts over the years and the students are always surprisingly into participating. Nothing has ever been as big of a hit as when I bought some yarn and crochet hooks--the students LOVE it. They crochet during lunch and after school, they teach each other, even students they don't know, and it is a joy to watch!

My students report that crocheting helps them focus, is something to do that is not staring at their phones, has motivated them to come to school on some days (so they could get more yarn!), and has helped them find volunteer opportunities in community centers.

I want to continue to provide them with the materials to keep creating and connecting with each other.
