This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

MY STUDENTS

Teaching in the South Bronx comes with many challenges.

The neighborhood itself is surrounded by government housing. English is a tough subject, but nevertheless, my kids show up every day eager to learn. In my classroom specifically, I have created an environment that is clean, smells great, and has decor that adds some brightness to everyone's day to add positivity to their mental health.

My students come to see me to get a snack, use the affirmation mirror wall for their mental health, or get some clean, fresh air. My students are unique and love to read and learn. When they come into my room, I want them to know that they aren't only here to learn but to be taken care of.

MY PROJECT

The goal is for them to continue to walk into a clean room that can help them decompress and feel welcomed, similar to a cafe. Snacks will provide them with the energy they need to learn. The cleaning supplies will allow me to continue ensuring the space is clean and free of mess. The floor chairs will also support my students who need other spaces to work and provide flexible seating when they break out into small groups.

I see how small changes can lead to more significant outcomes. Help make the classroom a better place mentally.
