My Students

To keep up with students all over the country, my students need to know how to research with technology. They work hard, and they deserve the opportunity to broaden their educational experience. These laptops will serve as the vehicle to get them farther in academia and life.

We are a 6th grade Language Arts cluster at a public school in the DC Metro area.

We enjoy all sorts of technology - from the "Week in Rap" to writing proposals for a "Bring Your Own Device" pilot. We want to keep learning fun by engaging in virtual field trips, "Skyping" to talk to experts for research, practicing the standard conventions of English, and blogging literature circles. Additional access to laptops will allow us to collaborate more and enrich our learning.

My Project

We do two major projects in the spring that students would benefit from while using additional technology. The first is an essay in which students respond to the prompt "Does your school have a bullying problem?" Students research incidents of bullying, and this year it would be nice to have that information go into a central location for all of my classes to use. The second project is a poetry project in which students choose and author and research them, choose poems based on theme, and then write their own poetry. I would like to give students the ability to read critics of poetry so they can apply those critics to their analysis. Lastly, we started a school newspaper last year and haven't had the resources to keep it going on-line. The additional laptops will allow students to produce a monthly student newspaper to keep the community involved in major events at the school.

Common Core Curriculum Standards expect students to be prepared colleges and careers, but if we're not providing access to technology and teaching students how to appropriately use these devices - then we're not preparing them.

I expect my students to be prepared for higher education, but they need to resources.
