Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What if the only alternative you had was to send your son or daughter to a school that could not provide 21st century learning. How well do you think they would do in their quest to be college-ready and how confident they would feel when they take the AP exam?

Our school caters to teens who have made mistakes in their past, but who just need someone to believe in them and give them another chance.

Located in a low socioeconomic community, these teens are forced to make difficult choices. Choices that most middle class students do not, such as working to help their families pay rent or putting food on the table instead of staying in school and getting a college education. These students would be the first person in their family to attend college and need all the support we can provide.

My Project

Currently my school cannot afford the technology that most schools take for granted. My desire is to be able to demonstrate to students in step-by-step detail how to solve an AP Calculus problem. A document camera would provide this opportunity along with allowing students to share their solutions with the whole class. In addition, my class currently has four calculators to share among 35 students per class. At more than $150 per calculator, our students cannot afford to purchase one of their own. It is absolutely necessary that each student fully understand how to use a graphing calculator for the exam. Without this knowledge, there is no chance they will be able to solve more than 50% of the problems, ensuring failure. Visual aids such as Geometer's Sketchpad provide students not only the ability to quickly see how changing the coefficient of a variable alters the shape of an object but also affords them a hands-on opportunity ensuring clearer understanding of the concepts.

In these times of rapid technological advancement, my students are quickly falling behind.

Without the proper tools that engage them in learning and provide them with the necessary skills, my students will be at an academic disadvantage for the highly competitive admission to college. Please help them experience their college dream. Be the one person who believes in them and gives them that one chance they need to become successful adults who can positively contribute to society.
