A classroom full of 17-year-old eager minds are attempting to learn the importance of moral education and social class! They need your help!
Hello, I teach English III at a high school in Kentucky. My students come from very diverse backgrounds, but not necessarily language-based differences. Their differences are in social classes and income levels. A goal in my classroom is to open their eyes to the ways that others live, value life, and to easily differentiate between good and evil. Several of these students have been in trouble both at school and with the law enforcement, and they're searching to find who they are and their purpose in life. In doing so, they've made terrible mistakes. They need guidance and role models to help them along the way.
To Kill A Mockingbird would be the perfect way for them to learn through literature! They would be able to learn valuable literary aspects plus life lessons.
My students are currently studying The Crucible and have really taken a great interest in the play. When asked why, they reply with there is both good and evil, trials, jail, witchcraft, and mischief. To Kill A Mockingbird has several of those elements, too, minus the witchcraft. I have no doubt that this story, too will "hook" them, thus improving their reading comprehension abilities and facilitate a love for reading.
In order to increase comprehension, facilitate a love for reading, and enable students to learn a few life lessons through literature, we need a classroom set of "To Kill A Mockingbird," by Harper Lee. We'll need 35 copies to be exact!
Your help will make it possible for these students who are in need of these valuable life lessons so they can survive in the real world in less than two years! They are very grateful and eager to learn.
