I teach at a Title I school in Alachua, near Gainesville, Fl. Many students receive free or reduced-price lunch. We have a diverse population with students from many different ethnic backgrounds.
Despite challenges they may face, our students work very hard, and thus our school is one of the top performing schools in the county and state.
These students deserve a comfortable, safe, and friendly environment. Our school works hard to provide the best academic and social environment for these children, but we really need help providing the some basic comfortable seating.
My Project
Students complain on a daily basis about their desks. I hear,
"Ouch, my hair got stuck," or, "Ms. M, the chair bit my shirt!"
The backs of many of our student desks have cracked, and as hair, uniforms, and jackets get stuck, these cracks gets larger. Some of the screws are loose, and once again hair gets caught around them. Some screws keep falling out even when replaced. It is time to solve this problem! I have carefully chosen new desks that do not have these same issues like screws on the backs that cause problems. Replacing these damaged desks would greatly help our students and our school. Having new desks will make students sit more comfortably without fear of ruining their clothing or pulling out their hair. This will facilitate greater focus on their work.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
