Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine 25 kindergarten students joyously singing to celebrate the start of a new day. I get to begin each morning to the sound of their little voices, and they bring this energy with them throughout the course of the day as they learn to become proficient in both Spanish and English through our dual language program. We are an Expeditionary Learning school that leads students through the inquiry process to become experts in their science studies!

I teach kindergarten at a progressive dual language school in Washington Heights, New York.

Washington Heights is a primarily Dominican neighborhood where many of my students are immigrants and speak Spanish at home. I have an integrated classroom, meaning that 25-40% of my students have special needs. Despite the various needs of my students, each child is supported to take ownership of their learning and achieve their goals. I believe that it is my job to empower young learners to become change-makers who advocate for themselves and others. My students are incredibly curious and eager to learn!

My Project

Block play is an engaging method that allows children to collaborate, problem solve, strategize and socialize. All of these skills are critical to the success of our young students in kindergarten. More often, we hear about the academic pressures of elementary school and that "kindergarten isn't what it used to be." I believe that play should not be absent from kindergarten, in fact, play should be integrated an essential lever to develop our young students.

Students learn STEM skills through block play!

Hands-on applications of STEM concepts allows students to develop into creative and flexible thinkers. These blocks will give my students rich opportunities to apply and experiment with STEM skills.
