Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year, I took a new approach to designing my curriculum and let my students choose the books and topics we covered in class. By putting them in the driver's seat this year, I've seen an upward trend of engagement. Since students specifically chose this book, I am confident that they will be overjoyed to learn it's been added to our class library.

When I asked my students why they selected this book, they expressed that they could not believe a young kid like William who came from a rural village with next to nothing could invent something as innovative as a windmill and provide electricity to his entire village.

Initially, they were doubtful this was a true story. But the more they looked into it, the more they realized that kids like William exist all over the world and are fairly similar to themselves in that people have repeatedly told them what they can't do. My goal is to share this story with them so they can embrace all of the amazing things they CAN do.

My students are a very unique group of amazing young people. I teach at a continuation high school that serves our most at-risk population in Carlsbad. This school has become a haven for students who need extra support, learn better in a smaller setting, interact with adults who are truly invested in their future, and seek a supportive and empowering environment. They are all amazing kids who need something different to help them find their path to their diplomas.
