Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each class period, my students are expected to bring their personal choice reading books to class. We read in class everyday. By the end of this school year, I want each of my students to read more books than they did the previous year.

My school is a Title 1 school, with 97% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.

Many of my students do not have access to books. We are a 7th/8th grade middle school, which serves 821 students. Our school library, while well stocked, does not have enough books to put into the hands of our students. My students will read if given the high interest books that are so popular right now. More importantly, I need books that will hook my boy readers. Each Friday, I read aloud from a book that I know they'll love. Often, I only have one copy. At the end of the day, students race to my classroom to check out the one copy of that week's read aloud. I teach 165 students and would love to be able to put more copies of those books into more hands.

My Project

I am requesting high interest books, 10 subscriptions to Scholastic Scope magazine, and 1 iPad mini to organize and catalog our class library. With the Scope magazines, students will have access to Common Core aligned, high interest, fiction and non fictions stories. The graphic novels will be very popular with the boys in my classroom. Graphic novels are books that allow boys to feel connected to an alternative form of literacy and to be validated as readers. Many of my students hold out to see the movie versions of the books that so many readers love. I hate to turn them down because I don't have enough copies of "The Fault in our Stars", or "If I Stay", to name a few. Each year, I lose many books. This year, I am hoping with the aid of an iPad mini, I can digitally catalog my class library. There are many apps available to scan ISBN numbers, which makes a tedious task more manageable.

Books change lives.

Reading changes lives. I need to send my students to high school as readers. I need to send them with the confidence and love of reading. I want to be able to put a book into the hand of every single student. There is no better feeling than matching the perfect book with a student. Students know that they can come to my classroom to check out books for as long as they need, without fear of library fines, and that I will have the books they so desperately want.
