Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are my heroes. My school is located in the heart of Liberty City, Miami. This is a neighborhood that suffers from horrible circumstances like gun violence, drug abuse and low-income housing. My students live through these dark circumstances, yet still are able to be the light in my life. I love them like they are my own.

My students are truly the roses that are growing from the concrete.

They are with me from 7:30 am when the school gates open until 6:00 pm at night when aftercare is done (after school is to provide a safe place to be after school hours to keep students out of trouble). Every minute I am with them I learn how to be a better person in the world I often take for granted.

My Project

Can you believe majority of my students have never tasted a cucumber before? Can you believe they did not know you would grow one in their own back yard? Growing up in the inner city has it difficulties, but knowing healthy food choices and how to produce them should not be one. Every person should understand how to grow their own food. Where would this education stem from? The school of course. The goal of this project is to teach the students in my school how to become sustainable gardeners and learn how they can grow their own food.

Every child should have the opportunity to see a garden flourish in their community.

The following items will help us start our school garden. This garden will be available to all students and teachers. This garden will house meaningful learning activities.
