I am an English Language Arts teacher in a high-needs, college preparatory high school in an urban neighborhood of New York with a diverse population of African, Hispanic, and Caribbean-American students.

Despite their avid reading interests, many of my students struggle with connecting to narratives and characters of pre-industrial America. I want to engage them with one book that challenges their simplistic understanding of history and with one that engages them with some of the central issues of class, race, gender and empowerment in a contemporary America struggling with its past.

I need one copy of 2 particular books per student in order to develop a meaningful dialogue about historical stories relating to slavery as well as the modern repercussions of divisions between people based on class, race and gender. These two books teach history and point-of-view in thoroughly compelling ways.

Your help with this project will ensure that my students' book bank of texts will be profoundly enriched. They are headed for college which will place them in competitive communities of well-read individuals. With your contribution, they are one step closer to being prepared for that challenge.
