My Students

Can you explain to me what a metaphor is? Symbol? Theme? Irony? Adjective? Interjection? My students are expected not only to identify examples of these terms but also to explain why a writer is using them. For students who find long stories and novels daunting, children's books are more accessible.

In a given year, I teach anywhere from 30 to 90 9th grade students who read at or below the 6th grade level.

Within my school of 800 9th graders, typically one-third or more of the students do not read on grade-level. These are students likely to drop out of high school and will rarely go on to get their GED and/or continue on to get any form of post-secondary education. These students struggle to grasp the English language, even though many of them speak it from day to day. They are unable to discover the rich world around them because they do not understand the figurative language, ironies, and playful nature of language that is evident in everything they do. In a nation where the type of job one gets is based on ones highest level of education, we need to give these young men and women the best advantages possible. The best way to do that is to build on their reading skills.

My Project

The children's books I have chosen on this list are colorful, playful, and varying in reading level. They can be used to teach symbols and theme and character and conflict in a quick and easy fashion as a lead in to literature from the students' textbooks. They can be used as lead-ins to individual writing assignments during which they create their own versions of fairy tales (note the variations on Rapunzel and Cinderella included below). They can help provide a foundation for learning different sentence structures once the students can easily identify the parts of speech.

Who knew children's books could be so rich and diverse that we would long to use them even at the high school level.

These books will grab the attention of the students and provide countless mini-lesson opportunities to build on highly needed strategies.
