My growing high school students need food, snacks and drinks. Amazingly enough, many students come to school without breakfast and often do not eat until after school. This leads to tired students who have trouble concentrating.
Our school community is a rural public high school in Hawaii.
My students have mild to moderate disabilities, and all of my students qualify for special education. We are in a high poverty area with many students qualifying for free lunch. Many live with single parents, relatives or foster parents. Despite these challenges, my students are bright, and many aspire to go to college.
My Project
I teach history, physical science and marine science to high school students. Many times, students will ask me if I have anything for them to eat or I can tell that they haven't had anything to eat because they are tired and distracted. The academic work we do requires focus and concentration. I want to help my students to learn and having food or a snack when needed will do this. I have often offered food to my students, but I have many students and I cannot always have it on hand. I'd like to partner with FEED USA to provide my students with healthy snacks. I want to show my students that they can have something both tasty and nutritious and move them in a healthier direction. At the moment, until I can get that situated, my students need healthy food and snacks to jumpstart their brains!
Having something to eat seems basic and simple.
However, some students do not. If I have something on hand for my students to eat when they need it, it will help them learn. It will give fuel to the brain and they will be able to focus more easily. I think this will be as important to the learning of my students as the science supplies for lab experiments. I know from my own experience, and studies support this, students who are not hungry perform better both academically and behaviorally.
