Help Ms. Stork

Have you ever been in a situation where your life just isn't what you wanted it to be? Where your dreams turn into a confusing and turbulent time and you feel as if you can't escape? I teach 12th grade English in a small town in the Arkansas Delta. My students live lives that nearly all would exchange if given the chance. Sadly, many students come to me, essentially saying they feel as if the town they live in has them trapped under a 'bell jar.' Our town may not be safe, and our school may not have adequate test scores, but we do have teachers that strive to help our students make sense of their world.

We have taught "The Bell Jar" in past years to the delight of many of our students. They are enthralled with the descent of protagonist Esther Greenwood and her relationships with the rest of the world. While our students don't descend to the level of Esther and her suicide attempts, many of our children do have similar feelings of struggling with the world they have been thrust in to.

In past years we have taken our single library novel and copied enough versions for a class set. With issues of copyright infringement, overworking the machine, and pushing away other teachers who use the provided resources, we've finally realized that we need donors like you to help us!

Please help our students to succeed, pushing themselves beyond our tiny town and the lives they feel trapped under. Our students need to continue to see that even when they hit rock bottom, they can survive. Too many of the students at our school feel trapped and try to escape through dropping out of school or entering less-than-legal professions. By reading this book, many students have reaffirmed their faith in persevering beyond obstacles, relying on others to help them through difficult times, and standing up for themselves when others won't. Please help my students to push aside thoughts of entrapment in order to help them succeed beyond high school and into their college years. Thank you.
