Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach first grade in Illinois at a Title I school. I have 28 students enrolled in my classroom. The students mostly come from low-income homes and according to the Illinois State Board of Education 98% of the students at my school were low-income students in 2008-2009. I would really like to enhance my students’ learning of the butterfly life cycle. I would like to go beyond the textbook with interactive and creative activities. Most importantly, I would love for my students to learn about butterflies hands-on by creating a butterfly habitat in our classroom that will allow them to experience the complete metamorphosis of a butterfly. For our lesson to be successful, we need 6 coupons for 3-5 REAL caterpillars. These coupons would allow for each student in my classroom to receive their own butterfly to observe and later release at our butterfly release party. My students will get the opportunity to watch caterpillars grow, spin silk and form chrysalises… then emerge as butterflies! In addition, we need 6 magnifying glasses that we can use to observe and investigate our butterflies. Our school does not have the money to fund extra projects like this one as much as they would like to. I think my students deserve to learn about butterflies beyond the textbook, they deserve a lesson that will get them excited about learning! With your generosity, we can get all we need to make the experience of learning about butterflies unforgettable. Please help foster a love of nature for my first graders; it is the best gift they can receive!
