My Students

My students love to make music wherever they are! Whether in the music classroom at school or learning remotely from home, they need access to quality materials and tools to help them develop their musical skills and understanding. It was really difficult for many of the students at my urban school to be quarantined away from school last spring, and I know they are excited to get back to school!

My students get really excited about hands-on music-making activities in music class!

I can't imagine music class without instruments. My students love to explore, improvise and compose their own music, working together in groups or on their own to express their creative spirit. These creative music-making activities begin in kindergarten and continue through 8th grade at my school.

Throughout their time at school, my students develop their musical skills and understanding of music through a wide variety of musical experiences. They learn to be problem-solvers, critical thinkers, and creative risk-takers in a supportive environment that encourages the development of their whole person. They learn to appreciate each others' differences, and learn from one another. It is my privilege to teach and serve such a diverse, engaged group of learners!

My Project

In these uncertain times, our district is planning to start the school year with in-person learning, with the possibility of switching to remote learning if the spread of COVID-19 warrants it. As singing is ruled out as an unsafe activity in close indoor spaces, until the pandemic passes we'll be focusing more on percussion and rhythm activities in music class. However, to reduce the risk of spreading the virus by sharing materials, I'm asking for your help with creating personal instrument kits.

Students in music class will need instruments of their own that they can use to keep the beat along with songs and movement activities.

Instruments like rhythm sticks (made from dowel rods), sandblock scrapers (made from pool noodles), give students a way to play beats and rhythms along with songs and chants that they do in class. Egg shakers and jingle bells let students dance and play an instrument at the same time. Scarves give students another movement tool, ideal for creative movement. Students can show the contour of a melody, the rhythm of a phrase, by moving their scarf through the air.

Students will be able to safely participate in music-making in the classroom, and when/if they need to learn from home, they'll be able to take these instruments home to make music at home. Wherever they are, whether at school or at home, students will be thrilled to know that despite the coronavirus, "the beat goes on!"
