Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 1st Grade Class is made up of 30 students. Half of those students are ENL (English as a New Language) students. The rest of the children are regular education students. My class is part of a program that is in its 3rd year of running in our school. The idea is that ENL students will learn the language from language immersion, as well as a co-teaching setting for the Reading/Writing portion of the day.

Students are often teachers in each other's lives.

The ENL students are learning English and American customs from their new friends, and the native English speakers are learning about world cultures and tolerance from their non-native friends.

My Project

My students need basic items to become successful and responsible 1st graders. They need pencil cases, pencils, erasers, and sharpeners. I would like to move away from the "community care" of basic items in our classroom. Right now, I have sharpened pencils and erasers at the ready each day. I would like to instill a better sense of ownership and responsibility in each child. I would like them to have their own "things" and to take care of their own things. I would like them to build healthy habits of responsibility- they would each be in charge of their own items, held in their pencil cases, and would bring their cases home each day and sharpen them at home. They would return to school the next day ready to work, having a pouch of sharpened pencils and erasers to use throughout the day.
