Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I had the fortune of meeting my students as 7th graders because I had good ties with their previous teachers. They are a very talented bunch, energetic, eager to learn, and dedicated. As 8th graders, I am sure they will remain as resilient as they were last year. I know they are engaged when the material is meaningful and rigorous. They vary in their skill sets, but they all have major strengths.

Most students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program.

Families have financial difficulties, yet this does not stop them from wanting the best education possible. Sometimes basic needs are not met, and this may pose as an issue but with your assistance we can supplement their needs.

They live in an urban environment that can be violent at times and some may have seen things that some of us experience from the news. Despite their challenges with poverty, they are bright and insightful children who enjoy discovering.

My Project

All students are required to have a neat readers/writers notebook along with a pen and highlighter for notes, reflections, classwork and group work. This notebook is the main class resource where they keep their syllabus and other major resources. Not all of them can afford this after having to purchase materials for all classes.

They also need a reliable color printer, ink and paper to print projects and the many essays we will be writing this year.

In the past, they have struggled to make it to a local library or print shop to turn in work on time. They don't own printers, so I want to facilitate the process, and have their work ready and available to edit, discuss, present and even showcase. I like to hang their writing in my room, and have received many compliments in the past. Guests and parents can consistently see new student work hanging in my classroom.
