My Students

Our students come from a low income neighborhood with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and lack of opportunities where visual and performing arts experiences are few and far between. We try our best to supplement this through cultural institutions and seeing local performances. Our first year implementing musical theater in our school, we were chosen by the Disney Musicals in Schools program and have put on performances of Aladdin and Lion King! Each year, more and more students in the lower grades are interested and anticipate trying out for the show- which proves that we need to make musical theater in our building sustainable and keep pushing ourselves to give our students this wonderful offer for after school enrichment!

We have seen the growth that musical theater offers our children in public speaking, collaboration, socialization, creativity, and confidence.

It has helped to give English Language Learners and Special Needs children a voice.

My Project

The musical theater students get so much more excited when they see images from our brainstorming come to life- transforming them once they are in full costume, head pieces, and face paint, while dancing and singing in front of a full production set with scenery!

These materials are the start we need to create beautiful backdrops, props, and costumes for our future productions.

We take for granted how much time and effort it takes to put on a vibrant and visually appealing show but it is such an amazing transformation from start to finish of putting on a new production. Alumni of the Disney Musicals in Schools program work together with our selfless and dedicated PTA members to create all the parts we need to put together a wonderful experience for our school community. In doing all of this collaborative and exciting work, our students get hungry and drained. Being in a Title I school, our students sometimes do not have a full lunch or snack. We are also asking for snacks to keep them nourished and energized for our after school rehearsals.
