Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in Harlem in NYC. My classroom is a co-taught classroom that services both special needs students and general education students. I have 16 students in my classroom. Of those 16 students we have many diverse needs. Some students have autism, some are english language learners, some are typically developing yet all of them are absolutely amazing in their own way. Creative, spunky, funny, inquisitive, caring, curious are just a few adjectives to describe the class of characters I have.

My Project

My school is in a low income area. Our principal tries her absolute best to provide the teachers and students with all that they need. Over the past few years this has become increasingly difficult. Our schools budget and funding has been cut. As a result the school is unable to provide the basic needs for our classroom. A rug for the meeting area. During class instructional time the students are sitting on hard cold tile. Who wants to learn that way?!?! We also need two easels as it is a co-taught room and we are often in groups. Finally, our writing center is in dyer need. Luckily it has paper but no bins to organize all our work. These things may seem so simple but they are really the foundation to making a class run smoothly... the basic needs.
