My Students

I have been teaching high school classes for just over two years. I come from an information technology background and have taught computer, video production, and leadership classes. I have had the privilege of teaching a problem solving through engineering class this year. Through this class, students find practical ways to apply most of their other subjects through problem-solving strategies. This makes my classroom unique from others because I have been able to take a more practical, project-based approach.

I have seen students light up when they discover ways they can use their math, science, art, and other classes to solve complex engineering problems.

My students have been able to see their solutions in use by other programs at our school. An example is when the ecology class needed water flow parts for their aquaponics lab. Rather than buying the parts they needed my students were able to employ the engineering design process to design, prototype, test, modify, and produce parts that were used in a producing aquaponics farm. I look forward to the excitement I see in my students when their work is used in a practical setting at our school and in our community.

My Project

Computational making focuses on critical and creative thinking through hands-on problem-solving activities. The biggest challenge I face as a teacher is finding methods to engage students in unlocking their creativity and solving problems with a critical mindset. This course promises to help me guide students through effective research, brainstorming, prototyping, and collaborative skills.

Integrating electronics can make students' projects literally come to life.

Currently, we focus on designing and creating objects that solve practical problems. This course will help me develop projects that integrate circuitry and electronics into their solutions. This will unlock a new door for students to explore more complex solutions.
