My Students

Coloring and cutting and pasting, oh my! Arts and crafts are always so much fun, especially for my young students, but we don't always have the materials we need! As teachers, we can only buy supplies for a few projects, but as third graders, our kids deserve more opportunities to be creative!

My third graders come from a wide variety of backgrounds to our small, rural school eager and excited about learning!

They love to "get their hands dirty" and make things and do things that can help them learn. We do live in a rather small community, the same community where I grew up, so we have limited opportunities for exposing our children to the arts. For that very reason, it is extremely important that we, their classroom teachers, incorporate art education into other subjects whenever we can!

My Project

The stories in our reading series provide perfect opportunities for us to incorporate art into our curriculum. We can learn about different artists and different art forms, and create our own works of art all while learning the skills we need to be top notch readers and even better writers too! One of my students' favorite art projects last year accompanied a story called "Elena's Serenade" in which a little girl wanted to be a glassblower. We wrote a paragraph describing Elena's art after reading her story. Then we watched a video about renowned artist Dale Chihuly (a glassblower) and looked at photos of his tremendous works. The kids were utterly amazed, and had no problem writing descriptions of his art! They then wrote a paragraph telling what they would make if they were a glassblower and describing it. Clearly we were learning about adjectives at the time! Afterward, I introduced their project and the kids got to make their own "glass" sculptures!

It's experiences like that, that make learning fun and keep my students engaged!

I would love to be able to do an art project like this for a story in each of our 6 units. However, our school has a limited amount of art supplies, consisting mostly of construction paper, and it can be very costly to purchase all of the items needed to complete art projects. With your help and your donations, my students can have consistent opportunities all year long to be creative and artistic while learning!
