This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love art! We are a Title One magnet school in New Haven, CT with a theme of exploration and innovation. Art is the place where my students get to learn and explore through the creative process. We learn about artists, art history, the environment, our community and ourselves. We are focusing our first half of the school year on environmental art. Our school has a school yard habitat with native plants to attract and feed the native wildlife. My students love being outside in our school yard habitat, exploring the local nature in our own backyard. I am planning various observational environmental painting and drawing lessons to spark even more desire in my students. They will be stewards for our environment through their artistic work and creative expressions.

My Project

My students love art. They have learned about many artists inspired by nature such as Van Gogh, Monet and O'Keeffe. We have done lessons inspired by these artists but they have been done in my classroom using photographs as inspiration. Our school is lucky enough to have a school yard habitat filled with native plants for our students to learn about. I would love to get my students outside to sit in the habitat and create art in nature. We currently do not have the proper art supplies to feasibly allow me to take classes outside to create art.

The transportable art materials will allow my students to create works of art by observing the plants in our school yard habitat then using their finished artwork to promote the importance of taking care of the environment.

Unfortunately, not all of my students live in a safe enough area to be able to create art outdoors near their homes. Many of them do not live near an area where they can appreciate nature. I feel it is vital that they are given that opportunity at school. I would love to give my students the experience of sitting in our School Yard Habitat, while peacefully observing the plants and finding the joy of creating art from the beauty that they see. This project is intended to not only allow my students to create beautiful works of art, but is also intended to further connect my students to nature and nurture their desire to protect nature and to use their art to teach others about the importance of taking care of the environment.
