Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a visual arts teacher I continue trying to find exciting way to infuse cross-curriculum information. This project will do just that. While they are making fused glass pendants they will be learning optical and thermal properties as it relates in science.

My school is located in one of the largest districts in Florida.

85% Hispanic, 10% Black, 5% other. It is a Title one school. This means were have been identified by the U.S. Department of Education as being in greater need than other schools in the surrounding communities. One of purposes in being a Title 1 school; promoting school wide reform and ensuring the access of children to effective, scientifically based instructional strategies and challenging academic content. It will be a major benefit for these students of whom many of them are just learning the English language.

My Project

My students need kilns and glass to show them exciting ways to understand how things they are learning in science and math, are used in other classes and everyday life skills. The school opened in 1964. The art room definitely is showing its age. The three dimensional tools and supplies are almost non-existence. It is my dream to breath new life into program. As my students are very talented with great financial needs, I would like nothing more that to offer them the opportunity to receive college credits along with the completion of a high school AP course.

Sadly high stakes test is the future of public education.

This project will allow my students to have a creative experience while reinforcing with a hands-on approach the ever increasing import core subjects. Projects like these bring the sciences to life and expand their creative abilities. It is experiences like these that have a life long impact on the future goals, dreams, and desires of our youth! Funding this project can light the fire in the hearts of future scientist and artist alike.
