One of my favorite writing assignments is to have students interview an older person in their life. We prepare for this by speaking about interviewing techniques, communication as a leader and contributor, and knowledge of narratives. Students each compile a list of 10-15 questions and conduct their interviews using digital recorders. Once students arrive back in the classroom with biographical information, students write narratives about their selected person’s life by firstly using a variety of planning strategies. Students share their stories with each other and accept constructive criticism concerning the selection of vocabulary, enhancement of central theme, tone and voice. This activity not only meets requirements of state and national learning standards, but proves to be a meaningful assignment for students and the older adults in their lives. My wish would be to invite Dylan Pritchett, master storyteller, to visit our classroom and to be our guest speaker at a PTA meeting. (This portion of the project will be funded by our PTA). Dylan presents a 45-minute program including African and African American stories, games, music and student participation. His presentations motivate students and teachers in the areas of historical research, arts integration, and writing. He is a professional full-time storyteller who is endorsed by Partners in the Arts and John F. Kennedy Center. His presentations have a unique way of teaching respect toward family, friends, authority. His style of delivery enhances listening skills, and analytical thinking. He gives students, and adults, a taste of the African oral tradition and the art of storytelling. Having Dylan come to our school and assist our students in writing a story from their research would be an amazing experience for all. He will assist the students in creating written documentaries from their recorded interviews. He would serve as a guest speaker at our PTA meeting. Students will be encouraged to bring their interviewee to the PTA meeting as special guests.
