My Students

My students’ worlds have been turned upside down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I teach in a low-income, high poverty area. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood in New York City, and 85% of our students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast, their daily source of nutrition. The school services many students who live in transient shelters. Eighteen percent of our students have special needs and receive special services. My students are finally based in the building.

These students are adjusting to life during a pandemic; they still need to wear masks daily in school.

Classes are closed during a COVID-19 outbreak. The road to recovery is social emotional learning and building academic skills while interacting with one another. My students need to rebuild relationships with others. They are mentally stressed. Our school population is comprised of general and special education students. The students are African American, Haitian, Latino, and Arabic.

My Project

Cursive writing is a dying art. In our school, with so many new academic and social demands for the teachers to teach the students, cursive writing has taken a bad seat. We need these books to help students develop their cursive writing skills. Our students have not had the opportunity learn the basic skills of cursive writing.

As electronic devices are increasing in our school and daily lives, writing by hand is decreasing; it has turned cursive writing into a lost art.
