This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHOH) program currently serves approximately 19 students in grades K thru 8th grade. Due to the combined effects of hearing loss, speech/language delay, some with fine and gross motor skills limitations or other health impairments, others with experiential shortages in social cues and academics, our students require continuous monitoring and academic assistance.
Our students struggle daily with receptive and expressive language.
However, no matter the challenges facing them, our students are always eager to explore the many facets of education. As a teacher in this program, I make it a priority to find the most effective ways in which to teach our students while giving them all available resources needed inside and outside of the classroom.
My Project
Our students would greatly benefit from a MacBook Air laptop to learn coding using Apple's Swift coding language. Our wonderful little school, along with many other schools today, struggle to keep up with the demands of new technology. A MacBook Air in their S.T.E.A.M learning center will allow our students to use visual based puzzles to develop problem solving skills and promote student creativity.
Learning coding concepts during their early years of schooling will help build the foundation needed in developing computational thinking.
Plus, with multiple grade levels in one classroom, a MacBook Air in our S.T.E.A.M learning center will help foster student independence and strengthen student coding language learning. By allowing our students to engage in interactive, hands-on explorations of coding concepts in the context of everyday situations, will help these students begin to think like coders. They’ll learn about commands, sequences, loops, events, and algorithms. Working collaboratively, students will practice predicting the output of their code, as well as debugging their own and others’ code and at the same time design their own creations.
Creating an environment that fosters independence, will make student learning fun, achievable and at the same time challenging and motivating. My students will benefit greatly in your donation of a MacBook Air laptop. Please make our iClassroom a S.T.E.A.M. success for years to come!
