My Students

Because I teach AP English Literature, AP English Language, and Honors English IV, I ask students to write, type, and get criticisms for what we read in class. My students print up a lot of papers; I proof and review their college essays. Also, I am department chair over a fledgeling AP department at my school, and to foster the students we have and attract more, we’ve established an AP S.W.A.G (Students with Academic Gains) Room for students to eat/snack, lounge, de-stress, study, and do homework. Our school is predominantly lower socioeconomic families; more than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households. Many of my students have fatherless or single-mother households where funds are low and tight. One of my students works at a car wash, and so he appreciates the snacks we provide in the S.W.A.G. Room and assistance with paper and printing capabilities; he is now a student at Florida International University. He's an amazing example of the types of students I'm trying to assist. Many will also be the first generation to go to a tertiary institution; yet, their desire for opportunities and assistance to help them soar and make it to college makes them stand out.

My Project

Indeed, projects, assignments, quizzes, and exams are the staple for AP students. In the inner city where my school is located, it is rare to see AP students, much less, see them excited about taking on the leviathan known as AP courses.

As well, my students print papers, projects, college applications, personal statements, resumes and study.

It is because we've seen the passion in these students that we've worked really hard to procure the space, seating, and items for a space for students to print, study, eat/snack, and de-stress; things they cannot do at home. Students have been known to stay in the AP S.W.A.G Room for hours after school because the home would not allow them to fully reach their potential.
