The American Revolution: Why Did We Revolt?

My students need a classpack of colored pencils and 8 pencil sharpeners to create drawings about the American Revolution. My students need 30 pencil grips to help them draw.

My Students

Art, history, technology! My students tell me over and over that their favorite subject is history. We create visual representations of historical themes, events, and answers to questions. We share our drawings and thinking maps with our school and families with a student-created website.

My students are energetic, curious, middle-school historians.

We are learning to ask higher-level questions and analyze history through hands-on strategies like drawing, creating websites, and making short films. My students live in South Central Los Angeles and are almost all English Language Learners. All of my students have disabilities which affect how they learn, socialize, and communicate. It is difficult financially for my students' families to buy them school supplies. 100% of my students are on the free lunch program. My students are talented artists and historians, and I want to help them shine. Art and technology help my students overcome their disabilities and to show and develop their abilities!

My Project

My students will use the requested colored pencils and sharpeners to create drawings and thinking maps about the American Revolution. My students who have physical disabilities will use the pencil grips to help them hold the colored pencils. My students will learn why we revolted against the British during the American Revolution. They will create history journal pages with the colored pencils, draw maps of Revolutionary New England, and create thinking maps about questions they have. They will create an American Revolution website using their work as images.

Donations for this project will help my students learn about the American Revolution through hands-on strategies.

They will continue to love history and feel proud of their achievements. The culminating project of an American Revolution website will showcase and share my students' abilities, talents, and learning with their families and community. I hope my students will discover that they have gifts and interests they didn't know they had.
