Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Teaching middle school students science, especially English As A Second Language students require a hands on inquiry based lesson plan. They must be able to see, touch and smell as they learn about their environment.
My 6th grade students range from beginning levels of English acquisition to those fluent in conversational English.
What reaches them best is when we can tie their lessons to their own real world experiences. With one out of three having home languages other than English the need for science based labs relevant to both the curriculum and their own experiences are necessary. Sharing the information they learn at home enhances the education of the student as well as educating the family.
My Project
The Air Pollution Inquiry kit will allow the students to test the air they breath for air quality and experience first hand the effect of pollutants on living plants as they observe over a period of weeks. Finally they will determine the effect of pollution on their environment and solutions for the future.
Finally I believe that early exposure to science, experimentation, observation and data analysis is the key to a strong base for learning.
This process of Scientific inquiry builds the foundation for continual questioning, research, experimenting and sharing of data will carry over into developing strong decision making processes for them in both science and life.
