My Students

Our elementary school is a diverse school in an urban community that serves students from many backgrounds. Each child brings with them unique strengths and needs. They are inquisitive and enthusiastic, and come to school ready to learn every day!

My students love to read, and they are amazingly creative.

In the intermediate grades, students are really beginning to find themselves as readers - they latch on to favorite authors or series, and they thrive on talking about and sharing beloved books.

My Project

My students love to talk about their favorite books, characters they love, and insights into the storylines of these texts. They are also a creative bunch, and this project will incorporate these skills to showcase learning.

Art and literature intersect as students create book canvases.

To commemorate favorite books students read together as a class, as well as on their own, students will create replicas of book covers. Using real canvases and acrylic paints will make this a special project. Each student will select a favorite book and sketch out the cover on a canvas board. Students will have time to chat about their books while they paint. Finally, students will give more formal book talks about these books, and their paintings will serve as an artistic nod to well-loved books for classmates as well as the school community.
