FULLY FUNDED! Ms. W.'s classroom raised $370
This project is fully funded
While taking grad school courses, I researched the educational benefits of teaching students the game of Chess. I was thrilled to quickly integrate this idea in my own classroom to reap the benefits. I have taught my last classes how to correctly play and the proper names for all of the chessmen.
When students complete class work or have free time (this is usually for those above average students), they are allowed to grab a board and find an opponent(that is also available due to completed classwork)! Students have responded to this wonderfully! We even integrated a Chess tournament in my classroom last year. I was thrilled with the higher order thinking skills that were occurring in my classroom within the fun of the challenge!! Although, the tournament took quite awhile because we had to rotate around the few boards that included all necessary pieces to play!
I only have approximately five complete Chess sets. And I have a very large class! Plus, I taught the other interested students from other classes how to play so now there is a constant shortage of available boards and pieces! I would love to turn this chess teaching session into an advisory/club activity, which meets twice a week. I would even like to see some less advanced students master the game during these periods.
I would love to have a class set of Chess boards! I currently have 30 students so that would require 15 boards for everyone to learn and play at the same time, and a kid carpet with fun and games to show demonstrations.
Can you help? It's your move. :)
