My Students

I have thirty two first graders who love to read in English and Spanish. In our school, ninety percent of the students receive free or reduced-price meals. My students have very diverse backgrounds and come together to form a wonderful community.

My first graders enjoy participating in literacy activities and they are eager writers and readers.

They love creating stories in both languages and learning new math concepts. They are eager scientists and they are always interested in learning and sharing their cultures.

My Project

I'm a firm believer in keeping the focus on what's really important: the students. If student motivation and higher engagement is truly the desired end game, then we as teachers must adapt right along with our students in our classrooms. To see that some classrooms look the same now as they did 70 years ago is shameful. Outside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them? Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This is why I would like to change my whole classroom and routines in order to serve all students. Each of the materials and supplies on my project will serve as new seating arrangements for each individual student. Some students find they learn better kneeling than seating on hard and uncomfortable metal chairs. Other students find it is better to use cushions and seat on the floor. The inflated wobble cushions will also serve as seats for students who would feel more comfortable seating on them rather than seating on flat surfaces. Some students need to move in order to focus. The bouncy bands will be perfect for them.

I am really looking forward to change my whole room in order for my students to feel happier and more aware of their own bodies and their own way of learning.
