Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are creative, compassionate, resourceful, and most of all, driven. "I love math" is a typical phrase you'll hear around the 6th grade. Students sing multiplication chants, collaborate on grapple tasks, and cheer each other on when we find a solution. We even celebrate mistakes because we learn from our mistakes. This is all to reach our big goal, college.

Their curiosity and dedication to their understanding of mathematics is inspiring.

Students go home and research a discussion topic from class, and then bring back their newfound knowledge: Did you know that there are an infinite number of multiples of any number, or that the number 1 is neither prime nor composite? My students live in the densely populated neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City. They all qualify for free lunch based on Federal standards of poverty. Most speak a language other than English at home, and a significant number of my students have special education services as part of their educational plan. Upon entering our middle school in 6th grade, students are at least 2 years behind in reading and mathematics. They all plan to (and will) attend college.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of unique seats for my classroom. Students will have the option to sit on yoga balls, kneel on stability cushions, or even sit on stools. Research suggests that students perform better when they have an increase in physical activity. With the new seats students will be able to use up excess energy, improve their posture, and burn calories in class leading to increased motivation and engagement.

We need to ditch the chairs.

Most classrooms look just as they did 70 years ago: students sitting in neatly arranged rows of desks facing the board. The times they are a changing and so should our classrooms. We recently switched out our desks for whiteboard tables to encourage collaboration and love of learning. However, students are seated idly in the same chairs for 7 hours a day. I want to empower my students and give them the choice to learn where they are most comfortable. I want our classroom environment to be collaborative, full of communication, creativity, and critical thinking. The gift of these new "chairs" will not only have a positive effect on their learning, but our new classroom environment will look cool, too.
