Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We live in a world where knowledge of basic facts & skills is imperative. Math education has improved, but students still need an opportunity to challenge themselves. I have many self directed learners who would love the opportunity to branch out & learn more on their own by challenging themselves.

Our school is a high poverty school with a very diverse population.

We have students who live on the local university, who come from all parts of the world, and, being in the oldest part of town, we have families who have attended our school for multiple generations. I have been in other schools, but the students at my school are special. They are caring, hard workers who take pride in what it means to be a member of our community. I take pride everyday in working with them and helping improve them. Our school has more extra curricular activities than most, and we're constantly looking for ways to challenge students, get their families, and the community, involved in their educations.

My Project

I picture my students who have already mastered the content I am teaching sitting at the back table, which is full of the resources I am requesting. The ability to play a math game on a Kindle Fire (which offers Adobe Flash functionality, making it accessible to literally thousands of web based learning games), or play a strategy game against a friend, would change the way I approach my math instruction. The ability for them to self direct, and push forward on their own would have a major positive impact not just on their scores and growth, but on their attitude towards math and school in general.

The items I'm requesting are sustainable, and I'm not going anywhere.

I am dedicated to my current position. These materials would have a positive impact on many a 5th grader for many years to come. I already know how I want to utilize these materials, I just need the materials themselves.
