Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Pre-Kindergarten. I think that Pre-K is a unique, very fantastic grade level. My youngest student is 3.9 years old, and my oldest is 4.9 years old! My children come from very low income homes. My kids speak many languages: Arabic, Bengali, Spanish, and English. We are part of NYC Mayor Mike DeBlasio's Pre-K initiative. This initiative guarantees that every four-year-old in New York City will have access to this life-changing educational opportunity, with roughly 70,000 children expected to enroll. It seems to be a great success. I am proud to be part of it. It has indeed provided my Pre-K students with a special, unforgettable opportunity to increase language skills, cognitive skills, and socio-emotional skills. It is amazing to see these children grow.

My Project

When most of my Pre-K students walk through the door in September, they have not had experience with letters. However, this year in their lives is a year for tremendous language development if we make sure the kids are exposed to letters and their sounds. The exasperated parents in my room tell me, "At home, my child won't stop talking! What is going on around here?!" I think to myself, "Wonderful! They're learning and growing!"

Every year, the Pre-K kids WILL gravitate and rush to the water table.

There, they will find Mix and Match Waterfalls. The Mix and Match Waterfalls will entice my students to explore the wonders of water movement…from a cascading waterfall, to a spinning waterwheel! The kids can use the waterfalls one at a time, but will probably stack units 2, 3 or 4 levels high, then watch in wonder and accomplishment their very own waterfall creation come to life! Plus, the mix & match design lets kids create a new experience every time.

When the Pre-K kids finally grow weary of the Mix and Match Waterfalls, I will replace it with Float and Find Bubbles. Conversations will begin and flow incessantly. "I found T for Turtle!" Voices will shout excitedly across the room, "I found A for Apple!" Aaaaah, the sounds of Pre-K are music to my ears!
