Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For the last nine years I have had the privilege of teaching Social Studies to terrific kids at a public middle school in New York. I work with 120 students each day. Over 70% of my students are Hispanic. This group has the highest drop-out rate among all groups in America. I want to make my class interesting and relevant to them. I want them to love Social Studies and to understand how the events of the past connect to them today so that they can better understand their world. As Aristotle once wrote, “If you would understand anything, observe its beginning and its development. “ I have found that if I can get them to see how a historical event connects to their own lives, I have them hooked. How could these goals be better achieved than to have my students create oral histories? We will accomplish this by producing video recordings of the valuable stories of our communities’ elders and other members. By creating and sharing these stories, my students can connect to history in a unique and powerful way. I would like my students to be able to preserve something important about the past that connects to them in the present. Everyone has a story to tell and everyone enjoys hearing a good story. Many people in our community have lived in our neighborhood for their entire lives. They have personal recollections of important 20thCentury events contained in textbooks- like the Great Depression, World War II and mankind’s first steps on the moon. I would like my students to hear first-hand stories of these events and to experience, through others within their own space and time, what it was like to live “back in the day.” I want them to record and view the stories. I want my students to understand that history is not just about the rich and famous. It is about people like them. I want my students to “feel” history. Our obstacle to this project is our lack of a video camera. You can give them this fulfilling and rewarding experience. What a great gift you will be giving to my future historians!
