My Students

Funding for arts education is in decline. In prior years, my students and I learned from itinerant arts teachers who taught the visual and performing arts. In 2010, our arts funding has diminished, and we receive only limited arts instruction from itinerant art experts.

My students comprise an enthusiastic group that learns in many different modalities.

They live in an economically disadvantaged community in California, and attend a Title I school. Many are English Learners, and most have limited access to extra curricular instruction in the visual or performing arts. At our Title I school, students flourish when they participate in arts. Their literacy improves, and they make connections between patterns in music and patterns in mathematics. An arts education builds their confidence and self esteem. Additionally, the children gain valuable skills in self discipline and positive self expression.

My Project

The recorders and music books I have requested will open up a world of instrumental music to my second grade students. These children of recent immigrants will learn and perform patriotic American songs. They will make connections between music and math, like fractions and patterns. More importantly, these students will have their first--and possibly only--chance to play a musical instrument of their very own. At the end of the school year, a culminating music recital will build their self confidence. Furthermore, they will get to keep their recorders at the end of second grade, a unique opportunity for these economically disadvantaged kids.

Research shows that an arts education improves students' cognitive, social, and psychological development.

Without a doubt, students at my school have benefited from participation in the visual and performing arts in the past. But with reduced funding, their access to arts education is in danger. Your donation will help bridge the funding gap, and preserve their education in the arts.
