Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students attend a public, magnet school and most come from a low-income section of Philadelphia. The demographics of our school are roughly thirty-eight percent Asian, nineteen percent African American, twenty-eight percent Caucasian and six percent Other. One hundred percent of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Our school also hosts a large population of English Language Learners.
Despite the disadvantages at hand that many of our students face, they love to dig deeper in important and challenging literature!
My Project
In the eleventh grade, students practice sophisticated strategies to engage the literary curriculum with an emphasis on critical reading and analytical writing. Through American Literature and non-fiction, students explore what it is to be an American and how literature and non-fiction communicate ideas about the human condition such as humanity and empathy. Students continue to practice the three modes of writing: argument, informative writing, personal narrative, while writing longer, more fully amplified critical analysis and synthesis essays, in response to American literature and non-fiction texts.
By funding this project, you will help provide my English III students with Elie Wiesel's "Night" and Toni Morrison's "Sula" to enhance student learning and inquiry.
