My Students

Hello! I am a high school English teacher at a high-needs school in the Arkansas Delta. I started at this school through Teach for America, but I am now in my third year of teaching here.

In 2006, our school was one of the lowest performing schools in Arkansas, with only 21% of our students scoring proficient in literacy on the end of course exam.

Scoring proficient on this exam is essential to receiving many of Arkansas's scholarships and avoiding remedial classes during a student's freshman year. However, through a lot of hard work from our students, we made significant gains for the first time last year, as our school jumped to 40% proficiency. Much of this success can be attributed to an increase in reading and motivation in the student body. According to our library circulation statistics, during the 2006-2007 school year, fewer than 100 books were checked out from our school library; last year, more than 5,000 books were checked out. This increase corresponds directly to the increased emphasis we are placing on reading outside of the classroom.

My Project

However, as scores have increased, we are now faced with an even bigger challenge. This year, the literacy department set a goal to move from 40% proficiency to 60% proficiency. This increase would make our school not only the highest performing school in the Delta, but one of the higher performing schools in Arkansas. In order to reach this goal, we have planned an ambitious program to motivate students and prepare them for their state exam. This program involved a comprehensive "boot camp" that reviews everything they have covered since 9th grade as well as voluntary outside tutoring after school and on Saturdays. So far, more than 70 students have accrued more than 300 hours of additional tutoring time to prepare for the test. The excitement at our school is palpable. This is where you come in.

Many of the students at my school have never been to Memphis, much less attended a NBA game.

As a reward for the hard work our students have displayed, we hope to take our students on a trip to a Memphis Grizzlies NBA game. I have arranged for students to meet the players before the game and to be recognized on the jumbotron during a timeout. This is a unique opportunity for our students, and only those who meet the requirements for tutoring and class participation have an opportunity to attend.
